NEWARK, Del. – Gamecock volleyball stumbles in second conference match at Delaware as the Blue Hens defeat Jax State 3-0.

The Gamecocks were led by Sophia Schweikert offensively. The sophomore outside hitter had 10 kills, freshman Claire Evans had eight, and Lauren Buchanan had five. Addison Stone led the way in assists with 15 and digs with six. Buchanan and Sofia Varela both added five digs, respectively.

Varela had the next most assists behind Stone with 13. Taya Nordmann paced the Red-and-white with two blocks, while Varela had a team-high two service aces. Jax State had 31 kills, 30 assists, and 30 digs as team.

Delaware downed the Gamecocks with a 25-15 final in the first set, a 25-19 win in the second, and a 25-18 win in the third. The Blue Hens were led by Anna Logan Gillens with 12 kills, Kennedi Inman with 34 assists, and Emily Zgonc with seven digs. Delaware had 44 kills, 43 assists, 39 digs, 13 aces, and five blocks in the match.

In the first set, a Buchanan kill made it 10-7 Delaware before the Blue Hens went on a 5-1 run to go up 15-8. Delaware closed out the first set on a 4-1 run. Nordmann had the final kill of the first set for Jax State.

In the second, Delaware stormed out in front 5-1 early on. Jax State responded to cut the lead to 9-8 before a kill by Evans and a Delaware attacking error tied it at 10-10. Delaware broke the tie with an 8-1 scoring run to go up 18-11. Trailing 24-17, Nordmann put down a kill and Varela scored an ace to make it 24-19. Gillens ended the second with a kill.

In the third set, Jax State scored four-straight to take an early 6-3 lead. Delaware then answered a 7-1 run to go up 14-10. Delaware later scored five-straight to extend their lead to 19-12. A Blue Hens attacking error and a kill by Izzy Whittaker cut it to 19-14. Moon tallied a kill to make it 20-16 before the Blue Hens scored four-in-a-row to reach set point. Buchanan and Evans notched kills to make it 24-18, then Delaware's Thalia Yancey clinched the match with a kill.

Jax State returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum next weekend to face the Liberty Flames. The first match is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m., followed by the second match Saturday, Oct. 3, at 12 p.m.
