ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Jax State volleyball lost their second-straight match Friday evening against Seton Hall in both teams' opening matches of the 2026 Blue Ridge Volleyball Classic.

Jax State opened the first set on an impressive 7-0 run to take an early 8-1 lead capped by a D'Yanna Spicer kill. Azavia Thomas put the Gamecocks in front 17-11 later in the set before Seton Hall cut it to 17-14. The Pirates went on a 4-0 run to take a 20-19 lead late in the set. Jax State then cut it to 22-21. Seton Hall before the Pirates closed out the first set scoring three-straight to win 25-21.

The Gamecocks got off to another hot start in the second set jumping out in front 4-1. With Jax State up 9-5, Seton Hall went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-9 advantage. Thomas then sparked a 4-0 run to put the Gamecocks back in front 17-16. Trailing 20-19, Izzy Whittaker sparked another Gamecock 4-0 run that was capped by a Taya Nordmann service ace and gave Jax State a 22-20 lead late in the second.

Seton Hall tied the set 24-24 before a kill by Thomas and an attacking error from Seton Hall clinched the second 1-1.

Following a 25-17 third set win from the Pirates, Jax State and Seton Hall played a tight fourth set and the Pirates eventually won to take the match victory. In the fourth, Jax State went on a 4-0 run topped off by a block by Nordmann and Sophia Schweikert and give Jax State an 18-14 advantage. Nordmann extended the Gamecocks lead to 21-16 with an ace late in the match.

Seton Hall scored four-straight to cut Jax State's lead to 21-20. Jax State went up 23-22 before Seton Hall took the lead 24-23. Seton Hall took the win with a block on an attack from Spicer.

Jax State was led by Claire Evans with 14 kills against the Pirates. Thomas added 11 kills and Lauren Buchanan had nine, respectively. Nordmann paced the Gamecocks with six total blocks and three service aces. Sofia Varela had a team-best 24 assists, while Addison Stone had 16. Reese Tiesing had a team-high 11 digs.

The Gamecocks return to action Saturday at 12 p.m. central against Bellarmine. Following that match, Jax State will face Western Carolina at 6 p.m. central.
