Cross Country Brings Home Two Weekly Conference Honors

DALLAS – Jax State Cross Country opened its first week of competition with two Conference USA weekly award winners, following impressive performances at the Foothills Invitational this past week.
Gamecock freshmen Shadrack Kipkurgat and Mercy Sergon were named CUSA Men's and Women's Freshmen of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday by the league office.
Kipkurgat put together a strong debut for Jax State at the Foothills Invitational, running his 5k in 15:04.8 to finish in second place out of 164 total runners. Kipkurgat's result helped the men's cross country team win the team title over 16 other schools, including Auburn, Samford and Troy.
Sergon etched her name in program history in her first collegiate meet by running her 5k in 17:08.7 to break the previous school record by nearly 13 seconds. Sergon finished in second place overall against 170 other competitors with a performance that helped the women's cross country team to a runner-up finish.
This season marks the second consecutive year that Jax State has swept the CUSA Freshmen of the Week honors for the opening week of the season.
