Associate Head Coach Tom Schuberth is in his fourth season on James Green’s staff at JSU and has 29 years of Division I coaching experience that he brings to the table.
Schuberth, a 1980 graduate of Mississippi State University, has experience as both a head coach and an assistant coach in his Division I career, one that has seen his teams spread 15 conference titles over six different Division I conferences and appear in 11 NCAA Tournaments.
He came to JSU from Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where in one season as the athletic director and head coach, Schuberth guided the Dragons to a 27-6 record and the 2010 Texas Eastern Conference title. PJC posted a 16-3 conference mark and finished the year ranked No. 14 in the nation, thanks in large part to the fifth-ranked defense in the country.
Prior to his stint with the Dragons, Schuberth served three seasons as the head coach at Texas Pan American, a stretch that saw the Division I Independent Broncs go 42-45, the best wining percentage by a UTPA coach since 1982. He was named the 2007-08 Div. I Independent Coach of the Year after putting together an 18-13 record and winning the Division I Independent championship.
He took over a UTPA program that had won just six games the year prior and hadn’t had a winning season in five years. In his first year he guided the Broncs to a 14-15 record, the best turnaround of all 20 Div. I teams in Texas. By his second year, he guided the Broncs to that Independent title and the Broncs’ second winning season since 1994.
Schuberth was a familiar foe to the Gamecocks in his last stint as an assistant, serving as the associate head coach at former Atlantic Sun Conference rival UCF. While with the Golden Knights, Schuberth helped guide them to an 84-41 record, as well as A-Sun titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004 and 2005.
He has also seen life in the OVC as an assistant at Southeast Missouri from 1997-01. His four-year stint in Cape Girardeau saw the Redhawks finish second in the league with a 20-9 record in 1999, followed by a 24-7 mark a year later. That 2000 squad went on to win the OVC’s regular season and tournament titles to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Schuberth also served five years at Memphis, where he helped guide the Tigers to a pair of conference titles, just after a nine-year stint at Louisiana-Monroe resulted in four conference championships.
As a player, Schuberth was a three-year letterwinner at Mississippi State from 1978-81, where he was an Academic All-SEC and an Honorable Mention Academic All-American. He guided the Bulldogs to the 1978 NIT and finished third in the SEC in assists in 1977. Prior to his career in Starkville, Schuberth lettered on UNLV’s 1977 Final Four squad.
After receiving his bachelor of science in physical education from Mississippi State in 1980, Schuberth completed his master’s degree in the same field from MSU in 1981.
