Jodie Connell, one of the most popular athletes to ever play football for the Gamecocks, was named Associated Press Little All-America in 1953. Connell was the first to make the prestigious AP team which carries with it national publicity. Connell, forced to play with only one arm due to a childhood accident, was a solid blocker and tricked many teams with guard-around runs and passes. He was considered an excellent passer by Coach Don Salls and was voted team co-captain in 1953.

After graduation, Jodie played semi-pro football in St. Louis and later coached high school football. Jodie passed away in 1983.
