JACKSONVILLE - When Jacksonville State hosts Stephen F. Austin this Saturday, there will be a special group of former Gamecock players that will be recognized.
During pre-game ceremonies, the 1992 Jacksonville State squad that claimed the NCAA Division II National Championship, will be recognized on the 10th anniversary of the football title.
"We're excited about the opportunity to have this group of former players back on campus to be recognized," said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. "Coach Burgess, who is a close friend of mine, is part of a special group of people that experienced extraordinary success at JSU."
The 1992 Gamecocks finished at 12-1-1 and defeated Pittsburg State 17-12 in the title game after Saks native Eric King batted away a Gorilla pass with :29 left to give JSU its first football championship and the sixth title in school history.
Crowe says that more than 60 former players from that team is expected to attend to be recognized.
Crowe is hopefully that Junior Kory Chapman will be available on Saturday, but Champman has seen limited practice this week. The Batesville, Miss., native sprained his ankle returning a kickoff last week vs McNeese State
Jax State entertains the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Paul Snow Stadium.
