DeLAND, Fla. – Jason Warpool tied an Atlantic Sun
Conference Tournament record, finishing 5-for-5 as Belmont rallied to score six runs in the top of the ninth inning for an 11-6 win over Jacksonville State in the first-round of the 2003 A-Sun Baseball Championships Wednesday.
Belmont’s Alex Renes faced just three batters to earn the win for the Bruins. JSU’s Jessie Corn (8-6) finished with seven strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs to suffer the loss
Trailing 5-2, Jax State rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead.
B.J. Burns led off and reached on an error and moved to second on a balk. Burns then moved to third after Shundell Russaw grounded out. Kerri Fair followed with a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Burns and moved to second on the throw. Fair then stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Following a walk to Bobby Hicks, Clint Carroll reached after being hit by a pitch. Danny Civello followed with a double down the left field line to score Hicks and Carroll as the Gamecocks took the lead.
Belmont then plated six runs in the top of the ninth inning to come-from-behind for the win. Two-RBI singles by Joel Novak and Wade Walter and a RBI single by Ryan Pettit led the Bruins, which sent 10 batters to the plate during the ninth inning rally.
“Obviously, we’re very disappointed,” said JSU head coach Jim Case following the loss. “But at the same time, I think you have to look at some of the positives. I think Jessie pitched his heart out today, although he gave up an awfully lot of hits. But, he battled through it.”
Belmont pounded out 18 hits, including five by Warpool, three by Pettit and Walter and a pair by Josh Radke. It was the second most hits allowed by JSU this season behind Tennessee Tech’s 21 hits back on March 24th.
Jax State took a 1-0 lead in the first when Shundell Russaw scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Hicks.
The Bruins scored a run in the second, two in the third and a run in the fifth and sixth innings to jump out to a 5-1 lead.
“The other thing that was encouraging was our team fighting back after getting down,” said Case. “When it looked like we were dead in the water - boom, we come fighting back.”
The Gamecocks cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Clint Carroll had a RBI-single through the right side to score Kerri Fair. Carroll finished with a career-high four hits to lead JSU’s 10-hit attack.
Fair and Civello each added a pair of hits for the Gamecocks, who is still searching for their first A-Sun Tournament victory since joining the league in 1995.
The Gamecocks face Jacksonville University on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Dolphins swept JSU earlier this season and Jax State must win to stay alive in the tournament.
