JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees voted to move forward with a combined dorm project and expansion of Paul Snow Stadium, which is expected to be completed by the end of summer of 2010.
The resolution allows JSU President William A. Meehan to borrow the money in form of bonds to pay the construction of the project. Volkert and Associates will manage the construction and estimates the cost at $42,547,408.00.
The facility will consist of seven stories, with the bottom four floors dedicated to nearly 400 dorm beds. The top three floors will include 33 luxury skyboxes, a new press area, coaches booths, radio and television broadcast facilities, and a game management booth. The stadium will also include the addition of 5,258 seats and will push the capacity of Paul Snow Stadium to nearly 20,000.
“These are very exciting times at Jacksonville State University,” said JSU Athletic Director Oval Jaynes. “We feel like the addition of the new dorm is a much need facility on our campus that will benefit the entire University. The stadium improvements will also allow us the opportunity to generate revenue that can be shared among all 16 of our athletic teams.”
Bids will be sent out in the coming weeks and the University is hopeful that work can begin on November 1. McKee and Associates, of Montgomery, will serve as the architectural firm. This firm has extensive experience in designing stadiums, including Auburn's Plainsman Park, Troy's Movie Gallery Stadium, and Winthrop's baseball facility.
