JSU Women’s Basketball Falls At SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri State jumped to a quick seven-point lead to open the game and never trailed on its way to a 57-37 win over the Jacksonville State women's basketball team at the Show Me Center on Thursday.

The Gamecocks fell to 4-16 overall and 1-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference while scoring a season low 37 points. The Redhawks improved to 10-10 overall and 6-4 in league play.

SEMO started the game with a 7-0 run and eventually built a 14-4 lead on a Tarina Nixon layup at the 9:38 mark of the first half.

JSU shaved the lead to six points three times during the half. Jolie Efezokhae made it a 14-8 game with 8:03 left and Eren McMichael cut the lead to 17-11 with 6:19 to go. Candice Carmine's layup kept JSU within six with 5:50 remaining in the first half.

The Redhawks closed the half on a 12-0 run to take a 33-13 halftime lead.

Southeast Missouri pushed the lead to as many as 28 in the second half while JSU never got the lead under 20 points the rest of the way.

The Redhawks shot 37 percent from the floor, including 41 percent in the first half. JSU was cold throughout, making 30 percent of its field goals and shooting 11 percent from beyond the arch.

Jolie Efezokhae was the only Gamecock in double figures with 14 points along with a team-high seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Brittany Wiley and Candice Carmine each had seven points.

Sonya Daugherty's 14 points led the way for SEMO followed by Tore Fite and Lauren Sharpe with nine points apiece. Crysta Glenn had a team-high six rebounds.

Jacksonville State continues its road trip on Saturday against Eastern Illinois at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill., at 3 p.m.
