JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team was able to hold off a second-half rally from Southeast Missouri on Monday night, when the Gamecocks escaped Pete Mathews Coliseum with a 71-66 Ohio Valley Conference win.
The Gamecocks (8-4, 2-1 OVC) led by as many as 21 points early in the second half before the Redhawks (3-12, 0-4 OVC) used a 31-13 run to pull as close as three points in the final few minutes, but JSU was able to make enough free throws to hold on for their eighth win in 10 all-time meetings in the series.
Sophomore Nick Murphy and junior Amadou Mbodji each recorded a double-double in the winning effort for the Gamecocks. Murphy, a native of Bronx, N.Y., scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to account for his fourth career double-double and his first of the season. Mbodji, a native of Dakar, Senegal, also pulled in 10 boards to go along with his 10 points, giving him his second double-double of the year and the fourth of his career. It was the first time since Feb. 8, 2007, the Gamecocks have had two players record a double-double in the same game.
Sophomore Jeremy Bynum led the Gamecocks with 15 points, thanks to a 3-for-7 effort from behind the 3-point line and a 4-for-4 showing from the charity stripe. The guard from Oxford, Ala., has now scored in double figures in five of his last six games. Senior Jonathan Toles rounded out a group of four Gamecocks with double digits in the points column with 10. Toles and fellow senior guard DeAndre Bray each dished five assists to set up the JSU offense.
The Redhawks' Calvin Williams also had a double-double on the night with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. Jaycen Herring had 15 points in the loss, while Kenard Moore pitched in 13.
The Redhawks shot 42 percent from the floor in the second half to boost their percentage to .354 on the night, while JSU hit just 32 percent of its shots in the second half to bring their field goal percentage down to .375 for the game. The Gamecocks won the battle of the glass by one rebound with a 45-44 advantage.
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 13-2 run, thanks to an 11-point run that was started by a trio of treys from Bynum. They then scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room and the first four points of the second half to build a 45-24 advantage with 18:56 on the clock.
They would lead by 21 again at the 15:44 mark before SEMO went on its run to cut the JSU advantage to 64-61 with 2:07 remaining. Jax State built a six-point advantage before SEMO answered to cut it to 69-66 with just 10 seconds to play, when the Redhawks were forced to foul Bray, who hit the front end of a pair of free throws to extend the lead to four. Mbodji sank the second of his two tries with .7 seconds remaining to give JSU the deciding 71-66 score.
The Gamecocks take to the road, where they will face Eastern Kentucky on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT in Richmond, Ky., before traveling east to Morehead, Ky., for a Saturday game against first-place Morehead State at 3:15 p.m. CT. Both games will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
