PHILADELPHIA – Jacksonville State's T.J. Heath has been named The Sports Network's FCS National Defensive Player of the Week, the network announced on Monday.
Heath started Jacksonville State towards a 52-7 victory Saturday at home against Tennessee-Martin when he returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns to give the Gamecocks a quick 14-0 lead after six minutes.
The Alexandria, Ala., native picked off a Cade Thompson pass on the fourth play from scrimmage and raced 26 yards for the first touchdown and then added a 55-yard interception return eight plays after that to give the Gamecocks a 14-0 lead before they had even run an offensive play and setting a school Division I record.
Heath added a third interception in the fourth period. He also added three tackles and a pass breakup.
Heath is the first Ohio Valley Conference player to earn the award this season and the first Gamecock to earn the National Player of the Week honor since 2007, when both Maurice Dupree and Drew Robinson earned the national award.
Jacksonville State, ranked No. 18 in the latest football polls, returns to action this weekend against Murray State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Murray, Ky., and the game can be heard on the JSU Sports Network with Mike Parris and Ed Lett calling all the action.
