JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State outscored Austin Peay 7-3 in overtime to earn a 75-71 Ohio Valley Conference win on Thursday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks have one three of its last four games to improve to 7-19 overall and remain in the eighth and final Ohio Valley Conference Tournament spot with a 4-12 league record. Austin Peay fell to 13-13 overall and 9-6 the OVC.
Austin Peay's Ashley Herring hit a three-pointer with six seconds left in regulation to cap a Governors' comeback from a 17-point deficit and send the game to overtime.
The Governors held a 69-68 lead in the extra period before a
Danielle Beneby three-point play gave JSU a 71-69 edge with 2:01 left. Herring made a free throw to tie the game with 1:43 to go.
Jolie Efezokhae made a free throw followed by a pair of
Paris Hollingsworth free throws to give the Gamecocks a 74-71 lead with 22 seconds remaining.
JSU forced Herring to miss a game-tying three point attempt with nine seconds to go and a Darcie Warner turnover after APSU collected the offensive rebound gave JSU the ball with five seconds left.
Kelsey Johnikin made one-of-two free throws to give JSU a 75-71 advantage.
Jacksonville State held a 47-30 lead at halftime compliments of three big first half scoring runs. The Gamecocks went on a 12-3 run to take a 19-11 lead after two
Cassi Stuart free throws with 12:18 left. An 8-0 run increased the lead to 29-15 after a Johnikin three with 9:30 to play and an 11-0 run put JSU up 42-27 with 3:07 left in the first half.
The Gamecocks grabbed its biggest lead of the game when
Destiny Lane dialed in a long three to give JSU a 54-36 lead with 15:34 left in the second half.
APSU went on a 7-0 run cut the deficit to 57-50 with 9:23 remaining in the second half before a 9-0 run sliced the lead down to 64-63 after a pair of Nicole Jamen free throws with 1:23 left that set up Herring's game-tying three.
Lane scored a career-high 21-points to lead the Gamecocks followed by Efezokhae and Carmine with 10 points. Johnikin added nine points and Cassie Stuart chipped in eight. Johnikin and Carmine collected with seven rebounds apiece followed by Efezokhae with six.
The Governors were led by Herring's 24 points and April Thomas's had 21 points and 17 rebounds. Jamen added 13 points, going 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
Jacksonville State continues its four-game home stand against OVC foe Tennessee State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
