FOREST CITY, NC – Jason Wallace went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to lead Appalachian State (2-0) to a 9-6 win over Jacksonville State (0-2) in college baseball on Saturday.
Josh Dowdy (1-0) scattered five hits with six innings on the mound to earn his first win of the season, while Nick Daniels allowed one hit over the final three innings to earn the save. JSU's
Austin Lucas (0-1) gave up nine hits in 2 2/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick lead after plating three runs in the first and second innings, thanks to a two-RBI double by Rand Smith in the first and a two-RBI double by Isaac Harrow in the second inning.
Jax State scored two in the second inning after
Jake Welch had a one-out single and
Matt McLaughlin followed with a single to right center and a throwing error allowed both runners to score.
The Gamecocks cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by
Todd Cunningham, but the Mountaineers pushed two across in the bottom of the third to build an 8-4 advantage.
Jax State scored two runs in the eighth inning after
Bert Smith reached on an error and scored on a
Daniel Adamson RBI single through the left side. Adamson came around to score on the fourth App State error of the afternoon to make the score 8-6.
Appalachian State scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final margin.
Adamson led the Gamecocks with a pair of hits, while Cunningham drove in two runs with his second career home run.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m., before the Gamecocks return for their home-opener against UAB on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
