FOREST CITY, N.C. – David Towarnicky and Rand Smith each had a pair of hits to lead Appalachian State (3-0) to a 6-3 win over Jacksonville State (0-3) on Sunday afternoon in college baseball.
App State's Chris Patterson (1-0) allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work to earn his first win of the season. JSU's
Malcolm Thomas (0-1) gave up six hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings in his Gamecock debut on the mound to get stuck with the loss.
The Mountaineers scored all six of their runs in the first four innings and never trailed en route to the win. Towarnicky led the way, driving in the Apps' first run with an RBI single up the middle in the first inning, scoring the second later in the stanza on an infield single by Smith and knocking in the ASU's sixth and final run with an RBI double off the left field wall in the fourth.
The Gamecocks scored a run in the second inning on a RBI by
Andrew Edge and two more in the fourth inning when
Blake Seguin and
Jake Sharrock each drove in a run on RBI singles.
Jake Welch,
Steven Leach and Seguin had two hits apiece for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks return to action in the home-opener on Tuesday against UAB. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
