JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's basketball snapped a pair of streaks against Southeast Missouri as the Gamecocks got back on track with a 62-48 win on Sunday at Pete Matthews Coliseum.
The 14-point win ended a seven-game losing skid for JSU and the squads first win over SEMO in 12 meetings. Jax State topped the Redhawks in the initial game between the two programs in 2004. JSU moved to 3-7 on the season and even its mark in Ohio Valley Conference play at 1-1. The win marks the largest margin of victory in an OVC match up since a 12-point win over Tennessee-Martin during the 2007-08 campaign.
JSU turned in a complete game on both ends of the floor as it held SEMO (4-7-7, 1-2 OVC) to just 48 points, a season-low for the homestanding Red and White. The Gamecocks out-rebounded the Redhawks 34-26 and forced 18 SEMO miscues, which turned into 24 points for Jax State.
Junior Brittany Wiley turned in a team-high 16 points and senior guard Zenobia Pitts sparked the JSU defensive effort with a career high seven steals and added a season-high 15 points. Pitts' seven swipes matches JSU's single game record for steals as former Jax State standout NcKell Copeland turned in seven steals twice in 2000.
In a first half of runs, it was a run by the JSU that gave it the lead for the remainder of the contest. After a 14-14 deadlock with 5:34, Jax State finished the half with a 10-4 run to finish off the half and take a 24-18 advantage to the locker room. Senior Danielle Beneby, who was one of three Gamecocks to post double figure point totals, scored eight of her 11 point in the first 20 minutes.
After SEMO nailed back-to-back buckets to start the second half and trim the deficit down to a point at 24-23, the Gamecocks responded with a 13-6 run over the next six minutes to take their first double figure lead at 40-29 after junior Wiley drilled a three-pointer with 13:08 left in the contest. JSU took its first of two 14-point leads at 48-34 on a JaDechia Hill lay up just under the eight-minute mark of the affair. Hill chipped in six points off the bench.
The Redhawks were led by Katie Norman's game-high 18 points.
JSU closes out the pre-Christmas schedule with a 5:15 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Dec. 21 against Eastern Illinois.
