Wiley's Basket Lifts Gamecocks Past SEMO, 51-49

Final Stats

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A jumper in the final seconds by Brittany Wiley pushed the Jacksonville State women's basketball team past Southeast Missouri, 51-49, on Thursday night in the Show Me Center.

The win marked JSU's first win over the Redhawks on their home floor and claimed its fourth OVC road win of the season. With the win, the Gamecocks claimed the season series over SEMO after they won in Jacksonville earlier this season. Jax State improves to 8-13 overall and 5-5 in OVC play.

Wiley scored six of her final 12 points in the final 3:45 of the game, including the game-winning jumper with four ticks left on the game clock. In the waning seconds left, Jax State had three opportunities to knock down a basket as Danielle Vaughn, Danielle Beneby crashed the boards along with Wiley's rebound and jumper for the go-ahead points. The Gamecocks out-rebounded SEMO 40-39 in the contest. They are 8-0 on the season when they win the rebounding edge.

SEMO held its largest lead of the contest at 46-42 with 3:58 left to play, but Jax State capitalized on the next three trips down the floor to take a 48-46 lead with 1:12 remaining in the game thanks to a pair of Wiley buckets and Vaughn's basket. After SEMO's Erika Lane evened the game at 48-48 with under a minute left, the Redhawks held a one-point lead at 49-48 after Courtney Shiffer hit the front end of two free throws.

In the opening minutes of the OVC affair, JSU jumped out to its largest lead at 14-8 at the 8:13 mark of the opening half. SEMO strung together a 12-7 run over the final eight minutes to trail JSU 21-20 at halftime.

Junior Destiny Lane led JSU in the scoring column with a game-high 15 points and came within a rebound of posting her second double-double of her career after a 10 point, 11 rebound effort last Saturday at Austin Peay. The Ashville, Ala.-native was also credited with three steals. Beneby finished with six second half points along with Candace Carmine's six points. Defensively, JSU forced 20 SEMO turnovers and turned them into 14 points on the other end of the floor.

SEMO's Lane led finished with 10 points off the bench. Katie Norman, the Redhawks leading scorer, was held to just eight points. Brittany Harriel pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Gamecocks will be looking to match last year's win total in overall games in conference wins as they close out the four-game road trip at Eastern Illinois. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. The JSU-EIU match up can be heard on the Gamecock Sports Network with air time set for 3:45 p.m.
