JACKSONVILLE – After wrapping up the non-conference season last Sunday, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team will have its first Ohio Valley Conference road test on Thursday as it travels to Eastern Kentucky.
Tip off between JSU and EKU is set for 4:30 p.m. CST and will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
Jax State (4-10) looks to rebound from back-to-back losses Auburn of the Southeastern Conference and to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech. The Gamecocks return to OVC competition after three league games at home during the month of December. JSU recorded a win over Southeast Missouri along with setbacks to Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois.
EKU, idle since a New Years Eve home loss to Western Michigan, enters its first contest of the new year at 4-8 overall and 1-3 in OVC play.
In a series that has been dominated by EKU, Jax State will be looking for its second-straight win over the Lady Colonels after claiming a 49-46 overtime decision last year in Richmond, Ky. The two squads split the season series as EKU knocked off JSU in Jacksonville, 79-67. EKU leads the overall series 14-3.
Since snapping its seven game losing skid to SEMO on Dec. 19, the JSU offense has heated up over the past five games. Over the past five games, JSU is averaging 64.0 points per game and knocking down 41 percent from the field, compared to the 51.6 points it averaged throughout the seven-game skid. In the first three OVC games, the Gamecocks have posted 60-plus points in all three games. Leading the JSU scoring surge has been junior Brittany Wiley, who has posted double-digit point totals in the past six games. The Carrollton, Ga.-native leads the squad in scoring at 13.7 points per game. In the last six games, Wiley has averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds.
EKU's trio of sophomore Alex Jones, sophomore Brittany Coles and freshman Marie Carpenter all average double figure scoring outputs through the first 12 games of the season. Jones scores 15.3 points per game and pulls down 9.7 rebounds. Coles registers 13.3 points per game and has turned in 19 blocks on the season. Carpenter adds 10.5 points per game.
JSU will remain in the state of Kentucky as it makes the journey over to Morehead, Ky. to face Morehead State on Saturday, Jan. 8. Tip off is set for 4:15.p.m.
