Gamecocks Rally To Upend SEMO in OVC Volleyball

JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Alina Agamy recorded a triple-double, senior Stephanie Koontz knocked down a career-high 22 kills and senior Lauren Harkins picked up a season-high 30 digs to lead the Jacksonville State volleyball team to erase a 2-0 deficit and pull off a 3-2 (25-27, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-6) win over Southeast Missouri on Saturday.
After dropping the first two sets to the third-place Redhawks (10-14, 8-5 Ohio Valley Conference), the Gamecocks (8-16, 6-8 OVC) hit .333 in the third set to spark a rally and claim their second win in as many days against teams ahead of them in the standings.
Agamy, a freshman from Bloomington, Ill., recorded 11 kills on a .400 attack percentage, picked up 11 digs and dished out 31 assists to notch JSU's first triple-double of the season. She split time at the setter position with sophomore Abbey Heredia, who added a double-double of 28 assists and 13 digs in the win.
Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., committed just five errors and found the court on 22 kills for her .317 attack percentage. Her first career 20-kill match paced a group of four Gamecocks with double figures in that category. Junior Hivya Leite had a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs, while senior Liza Senenkova added 11 kills.
Harkins, in her second match at the libero position this season, dug 30 balls for the first time in 2011 and for just the eighth time in her record-breaking career at JSU. The Louisville, Ky., native moved her school-record total to 2,050 career digs, inching closer to sixth place in the OVC's career record book. She trails Cherelle Lampkins of Morehead State by 32.
Sophomore Kelly Cole rounded out a group of five Gamecocks with double figures in the digs column with 12.
On the front row, JSU blocked 11 SEMO attacks, thanks to seven from Senenkova and three apiece from freshmen Nicole Merget and Alicia Dukes. Agamy was one of three Gamecocks with two blocks.
The Redhawks were led by Colleen Yarber with14 kills on offense, while Berkley Idel's 18 digs paced them on the defensive side of the net.
The Gamecocks take to the road for the next two weeks, a four-match swing that will open on Friday at Tennessee State in Nashville at 7 p.m. They will return home to close the regular season against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 11-12.
