
JSU Volleyball Falls at Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky was clicking on all cylinders on Friday night, when the Colonels handed the Jacksonville State volleyball team a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-8) defeat in Ohio Valley Conference action.
The Gamecocks (6-12, 4-4 OVC) got 11 kills from senior Stephanie Koontz and 16 digs from sophomore Kelly Cole but it wouldn't be enough against the Colonels (10-9, 5-3 OVC). EKU watched Abbey Cvelbar amass 10 kills on just 12 swings for an .833 attack percentage to guide its offense to a .354 attack percentage.
Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., needed just 22 attacks to pick up her match-high 11 kills, while Cole, a native of Mishawaka, Ind., led all players with her 16 digs. They were the only Gamecocks in double figures in each of their respective categories.
On JSU's front row, freshman Nicole Merget pitched in five kills on a .500 attack percentage, while freshman Alina Agamy had three kills on a .333 clip to go along with her 13 assists. Sophomore Abbey Heredia dished 14 assists while splitting time with Agamy at the setter position.
Cvelbar also managed a match-high 19 assists for the Colonels, who saw Dena Ott lead the way on defense with 15 digs.
The match started a three-match road trip that spans just four days and will continue on Saturday with a 4 p.m. CT match at Morehead State in Morehead, Ky. The trip will conclude on Monday with a 6 p.m. meeting with UT Martin in Martin, Tenn.
