MOREHEAD, Ky. - The sixth-seeded Jacksonville State volleyball team's season came to a disappointing end on Thursday afternoon, when No. 3 seed UT Martin rallied to win the final three sets and advance with a 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-20, 15-12) win over the Gamecocks.
After claiming the opening two sets of the six-team, single-elimination tournament, the Gamecocks (11-20) rattled off a pair of points to serve for match point. The Skyhawks (18-13) held, however, scored the next three points to force a fourth set and never looked back.
Three JSU seniors closed their careers in the loss but did so in impressive fashion. Middle blocker Liza Senenkova led JSU with 19 kills on a .317 attack percentage, while fellow middle blocker Stephanie Koontz added 17 kills on a .298 clip. Both seniors blocked four UTM swings. Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Senenkova, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, each capped All-Ohio Valley Conference seasons.
Libero Lauren Harkins notched her ninth 20-dig performance of the season and run her school-record career total to 2,163. The Louisville, Ky., native is the only Gamecock and is just the eighth OVC player to pick up 2,000 digs in a career, while her career total now ranks fifth on the OVC's career list. In addition to the school record for career digs, Harkins leaves JSU as the school record holder for digs in a season.
Freshman Alina Agamy recorded her 10th double-double of the season with an impressive offensive and defensive effort. The Bloomington, Ill., native grabbed 20 digs, while dishing 32 of the Gamecocks' 64 assists. She also assisted on four blacks and put down six kills.
Junior Hivya Leite also finished off her 10th double-double of the year, thanks to 11 kills and 13 digs. The Cabedelo, Brazil, native put together a double-double in each of her last five matches. Sophomore Abbey Heredia's double-double of 20 assists and 18 digs is the 15th of the season for the Cary, Ill., native. Sophomore Kelly Cole grabbed 19 digs to round out a group of five Gamecocks with double figures in digs, while junior Jen Meyer pitched in nine kills on a .333 attack percentage.
The Skyhawks were led by Ashley Doherty's 19 kills and Kasey Elswick's 31 digs. Jenna Miller had a double-double of 51 assists and 17 digs.
The Skyhawks advance to face No. 2 seed Tennessee State in Friday's semifinal.
