
Gamecocks Fall in Five Sets at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Senior Liza Senenkova had 18 kills and senior Lauren Harkins grabbed 20 digs on Friday night, but SIU-Edwardsville pulled off a 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10) win in a see-saw Ohio Valley Conference battle with the Jacksonville State volleyball team.
Senenkova, a middle blocker from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, hit a blistering .405 and blocked six shots, but the Gamecocks (9-18, 7-10 OVC) couldn't hang on in the first ever road match against the OVC-newbie Cougars (11-18, 6-11 OVC). JSU hit .267 in a match that saw 32 ties and 12 lead changes, while SIUE managed to pull out the season sweep despite a .199 attack percentage.
Harkins, a libero from Louisville, moved into sixth place on the OVC's career digs list in leading four Gamecocks with double figures in digs. The fourth-year senior is already JSU's record holder for career digs and ran her career total to 2,093 in Friday's loss.
Sophomore Abbey Heredia and junior Hivya Leite notched double-doubles for Jacksonville State in the match. Heredia, a setter from Cary, Ill., dished a team-high 30 assists and picked up 11 digs, while Leite, an outside hitter from Cabedelo, Brazil, had 15 kills and 15 assists on the night. Freshman Alina Agamy helped Heredia set up the JSu offense with 26 assists to go along with her seven kills, seven digs and five blocks.
Senior Stephanie Koontz was the only other JSU player with double-digit kills with 10, while sophomore Kelly Cole pitched in on the back row with 11 digs.
The Cougars got 15 kills from Jessica Hemann, while Chelsea Colclasure grabbed 24 digs on the defensive side of the net. Sammi Minton passed out 55 of the team's 59 assists.
The Gamecocks will wrap up their 2011 road schedule on Saturday with a 6 p.m. match at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. JSU will cinclude the regular season next weekend with a pair of home matches at Pete Mathews Coliseum, a weekend that will begin with a Friday date with regular-season champion Morehead State and conclude with a Senior Day match with Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
