OVC Feature on JSU
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State women's basketball team will look for its fourth consecutive home win on Tuesday evening as it opens Ohio Valley Conference play against Eastern Kentucky at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
Spend the beginning of the holiday week with the Gamecocks with admission just $1. A ticket for Jax State's Dec. 28 contest will also be available for just $1.
The Gamecocks (3-9) just returned from the state of Florida's city of Jacksonville as they dropped all three games in the Sunshine State city to Jacksonville, FIU and North Florida over the past weekend. The Lady Colonels of EKU have been idle since a Dec. 10 loss at Miami (Ohio). EKU enters the OVC opener with a season's mark of 4-6.
Tuesday's meeting will be the 20th all time match up between JSU and EKU on the hardwood with the Maroon and White holding a 13-6 advantage in the series. Although the Lady Colonels have a seven-game lead in the series, the Gamecocks have been winners of the last three meetings, including a sweep of the season series a year ago. JSU held on for a 64-59 win in Jacksonville last year and overcame a ten-point halftime deficit in Richmond, Ky. last year to win on EKU's home floor.
Jax State looks to protect its home floor for the fourth time this season as all three wins this season have come in the friendly confines of Pete Mathews Coliseum. JSU has not put together four consecutive home wins since the 2005-06 season. The Gamecocks turned in wins over Tennessee State (1/14/06), Austin Peay (1/26/11), UT Martin (1/28/11) and EKU (2/16/06).
Since joining the Ohio Valley Conference, JSU is 3-5 in conference-opening games. Jax State enters Tuesday's OVC lid lifter looking to snap a three-game losing skid in the first conference match up of the year. The last OVC opening win for the Gamecocks came during the 2007-08 campaign - a 76-63 road win at former OVC member Samford. The home contest with Eastern Kentucky marks the third consecutive season in which JSU has opened league play at home.
Freshman Briana Morrow has taken over the team lead in scoring after a steady performance this past weekend in Florida. Morrow, a 5-11 post player from Nashville, Tenn., leads a trio of Gamecock players in double digit scoring marks at 11.4 points per game. Morrow ranks second on the team in rebounds by pulling down 7.6 boards per game and in blocks with 11 through 12 games in her rookie season. Morrow had her best outing of the season last Thursday at Jacksonville as she posted 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting. She followed that performance with a ten point game versus FIU last Saturday and nearly posted a double-double with eight points and nine boards. She has recorded double digit scoring games in five of the last six games. Morrow earned the OVC's Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 6.
EKU is led by Sophomore Marie Carpenter's 13.5 points per game mark. Juniors Jade Barber and Alex Jones average ten points per game. Junior Brittany Coles leads EKU on the boards with a 4.0 rebounding average. As a team, EKU averages 63.4 points per game and holds the opposition to 61.7 points, which ranks second in the OVC. The Lady Colonels are tops in the league in three-point shooting defense, allowing just 26 percent from beyond the arc. EKU is the early leader in the conference in blocked shots with 40 this season.
After Tuesday's conference battle with Eastern Kentucky, Jax State will enjoy an eight day break away from competition for Christmas. The Gamecocks will return to campus on Dec. 26 to prepare for their final non-conference tilt of 2011-12 as they welcome Georgia State to Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
