JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State begins the final homestand of the season on Thursday hosting Austin Peay in a 7 p.m. matchup. The Gamecocks will Paint “The Pete” Pink to promote the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative.
Teams from across the nation are taking part in the WBCA's Pink Zone as it brings awareness about breast cancer and supports the cancer research efforts of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the contest. General admission tickets are just $1.
JSU (9-17, 6-9 OVC) looks to sew up a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament that is just around the corner in Nashville, Tenn. The Red and White need a win or a loss by either Tennessee State or Murray State to secure its berth in the eight-team field. A spot in the 2011 post-season event will erase a one-year absence by JSU as it last made the field in 2008-09. This year begins a new format for the OVC Tournament as all eight men's and women's teams will converge in the Music City on March 2-5 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
Jax State looks to halt a two-game losing skid after dropping games at UT Martin and Murray State last weekend, while the Lady Govs (10-16, 9-5 OVC) enter the weekend having won their last three games all on the home floor. APSU has claimed the last three meetings between the two squads, including a 65-54 win over JSU in Clarksville earlier this season. The Gamecocks hold a 5-3 advantage over APSU in games contested at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The last Jax State win in the 18 game series was a 75-71 overtime win in February of 2009.
Junior guard
Brittany Wiley continues to lead the JSU scoring charge with 14.6 points per game, even though she was inactive last weekend. Sophomore
Danielle Vaughn did her part to fill the void of Wiley as she turned in back-to-back double-digit performances last weekend. The Huntsville, Ala.-post player turned in 20 points and 13 rebounds at UTM and 10 points versus Murray State. Vaughn has reached double figures in the scoring column in four out of the last five games ad pushed her season's average to 9.0 points per game. Junior
Destiny Lane has sparked the Gamecocks since her double-double outing at APSU. Since her 11 point, 10 rebound game in Clarksville, the Ashville, Ala.-product has carded five games in double figures, including a 16-point effort at UTM.
Senior floor general
Danielle Beneby is inching closer to etching her name in JSU laurels in career assists and steals. She is seven assists away from reaching 100 assists in a season and 22 dish outs away from becoming the school's Division I assist leader. Beneby, who hails from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., currently stands third on JSU's all-time steal chart with 149 in her career. She needs just three steals to move into second place on that list, surpassing former Gamecock NcKell Copeland (1999-03).
Following Thursday's date with the Lady Govs, the Gamecocks will put the finishing touches on the 2010-11 home slate on Saturday, Feb. 19 against Tennessee State. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. and will be televised on the Wazoo Network. Prior to tip off, JSU will honor its two departing seniors – Beneby and
Candice Carmine along with senior manager Drew Hall.
