JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team has clinched a spot in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament after Thursday night's OVC action.
The Gamecocks, who were idle on Thursday and will close out the regular season on Saturday at Tennessee Tech, will be making their sixth OVC postseason appearance since joining the league in 2004. JSU's match up with the Golden Eagles of TTU will have tournament seeding on the line. TTU (21-6, 14-3 OVC) will be looking to wrap up the league's regular season crown and the top seed in the eight-team field in the 5:30 p.m. match up. Jax State (9-19, 6-11 OVC) will either be the No. 6 or 7 seed in the event which gets underway on Wednesday, March 2 at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium. The OVC will release the final bracket once the regular season is completed on Saturday.
The tournament format is different than past years in which the opening round was played at the higher seed and those survivors advanced to the Music City. This year, all eight men's and women's teams will convene in Nashville to begin the drive to a conference championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
JSU looks to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday in Cookeville and carry momentum with it into the tournament. Since claiming a home win on Feb. 5 against Eastern Kentucky, the Red and White have dropped a pair of road losses at UT Martin and Murray State and closed out the home schedule last weekend with setbacks to Austin Peay and Tennessee State. The Gamecocks have struggled shooting during the last four games as they have hit just 31 percent from the field and averaged 55 points per game.
The Golden Eagles have had JSU's number in the last five meetings and own a 12-3 lead in the series. JSU's last win on the hardwood over TTU was in Cookeville in 2008. The Purple and Gold claimed the first meeting of the season in Jacksonville, 79-63.
The JSU-TTU contest will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network with air time set for 5:15 p.m.
