Gamecocks Rally for 9-6 Win Over Middle Tennessee in 14 Innings

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Junior Ben Waldrip went 5-for-7 with a pair of home runs as Jacksonville State rallied for three runs in the top of the 14th inning to claim a 9-6 win over Middle Tennessee to win the series on Saturday.
Junior Todd Hornsby (1-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief and had a pair of strikeouts, while allowing six hits to earn his first win of the season. Freshman Casey Antley earned his first career save after retiring the final three outs for the Gamecocks. MTSU's Hunter Dawson (0-1) got stuck with the loss after giving up all three runs in the extra frames.
It marked the fourth straight win by Jax State over Middle Tennessee and the Gamecocks have now won five of the last six meetings.
Jax State (2-2) took an early 3-0 lead in the top of first inning on a RBI single by Sam Eberle, before Waldrip slugged a two-run home run to right field for his first career homer for the Gamecocks.
Freshman Coty Blanchard led off the second with a triple and scored on an Andrew Bishop grounder as the Gamecocks built a 4-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee (1-4) scored a pair of runs on RBI singles by Tyler Acker and Davis Pearce, but Jax State answered in the third inning.
Waldrip had a one-out solo home run to push the lead to 5-2, before Blanchard drove in a run with a RBI single to right field to extend Jacksonville State's lead for Gamecock starter Taylor Sparks.
MTSU rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to score four runs to tie the game at 6-6, thanks to a two-RBI double by Jay Morris, and RBI singles by Will Skinner and Peace. Peach led the Blue Raiders with four hits, while Tyler Acker finished with three hits.
The Gamecocks were able to get double plays to end MTSU scoring threats in the 10th and 12th innings.
Waldrip led off the 14th with a single and Michael Bishop followed with a one-out walk. Andrew Bishop then gave Jax State the lead on a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Waldrip, before Blake Seguin had a RBI single to center field to score Andrew Bishop and a fielding error allowed Michael Bishop to cross the plate for the final margin.
Waldrip's five hits led the Gamecocks' 18-hit attack, while Blake Seguin and Erik Underwood each added three hits. Blanchard, Eberle and Andrew Bishop also each had two hits for Jax State.
The 14th inning win was the longest game by Jax State since dropping a 15 inning game to Southeast Louisiana on Feb. 18, 2005.
