JACKSONVILLE – After a one-year absence, No. 6-seed Jacksonville State returns to postseason play in the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and will begin its quest for an OVC Title on Wednesday in the opening round against Tennessee State (9-20,5-13 OVC), the tournament's No. 7 seed.
The Gamecock-Lady Tiger duel will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The winner of Wednesday's 2 p.m. contest will take on No. 3-seed Morehead State on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
As the postseason begins, the Gamecocks (9-20, 6-12 OVC) will be looking for a fresh start in March after finishing the month of February 1-6 and have dropped five-straight heading into the Music City. The lone win came against Eastern Kentucky back on Feb. 5 at home in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Wednesday's contest will be the rubber match between the Gamecocks and Lady Tigers as the two squads split the 2010-11 season series. The Gamecocks topped the Lady Tigers, 77-73, in the Gentry Center (Jan. 20) on the TSU campus, while the Blue and White downed Jax State, 58-42, in Jacksonville on Feb. 19. Wednesday's matchup will be the 20th in the series with JSU holding an 11-8 edge in the overall series between the two schools.
Jax State's 2011 appearance in the OVC Tournament will be the sixth since joining the league in 2004. JSU missed out on the field last season after making back-to-back appearances in 2008 and 2009. The Gamecocks were apart of the OVC postseason event each year from 2004-2006. JSU's lone win in the tournament came against TSU in 2005 as it squeaked past the Lady Tigers in Jacksonville, 65-64. Jax State fell to Eastern Kentucky in the semifinal round in Nashville, 62-60.
After the month of January, Tennessee State's chances of making the drive across town to the Nashville Municipal Auditorium for the 2011 edition of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament looked dim, but after winning four out of its last eight games, including three conference wins over Murray State, Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri in the final month of the season. TSU is led in the scoring column by freshman Tayla Foster and senior Meredith Stafford. Foster, who has been hobbled by an injury in the late stages of the season, averages 12.0 points per game. She sat out the Tennessee Tech, JSU and SEMO contests, but returned to action on Saturday against EIU.
Junior Brittany Wiley has moved within 64 points of becoming the 10th player to join JSU's 1,000 career point club. The Carrollton, Ga.-native has accumulated 936 points through two-plus seasons in a Gamecock uniform. For her career, her point average stands at 11.4 points per game. In 27 games this season, WIley has turned in 383 points for a team-best 14.2 average. She returned to her double-figure point total form against Tennessee Tech with 18 points - her 20th double-digit point total game of the season and 49th of her career. Wiley becomes the first Gamecock since Courtney Slaughter (2006-07) to post 20 double figure scoring games in a season. She needs one more game to tie former Jax State standout, Dana Bright (1987-91) with 50 double-digit scoring games in a career.
