JACKSONVILLE – John Hogan went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs to lead Austin Peay to a 7-2 win over Jacksonville State as the Governors claimed the Ohio Valley Conference series over the Gamecocks on Sunday at Rudy Abbott Field.
Ryne Harper (1-1) had a pair of strikeouts and recorded the final four outs to earn his first win of the season. JSU's
Todd Hornsby (3-3) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks after giving up five runs in just 2/3 inning.
The Governors took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Wollenzin, but the Gamecocks answered in the home half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Erik Underwood to tie the game at 1-1.
Jax State took the lead in the fifth inning after
Michael Bishop reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a balk.
Jake Sharrock followed with a RBI double down the right field line as the Gamecocks built a 2-1 lead.
Austin Peay battled back to tie the game in the eighth inning on a RBI single by John Hogan to make the score 2-2 and then took the lead in the top of the ninth inning.
The Governors loading the bases with one out before Michael Blanchard hit a high chopper to third for an infield single that scored the go-ahead run. Austin Peay tacked on four more runs on RBI singles by Jon Clinard and Greg Bachman, while Reed Harper scored on a Gamecock error and a sacrifice fly by Hogan gave the Governors a 7-2 lead.
Clinard and Bachman each added a pair of hits for the Governors, while
Blake Seguin led Jax State with three hits, while Blanchard had two hits.
Jacksonville State returns to action with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend at Southeast Missouri State.
