Kyle Bluestein and Ben Waldrip Lead Gamecocks into OVC Baseball Finals

JACKSON, Tenn. – Kyle Bluestein went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs and Ben Waldrip hit a pair of home runs to lead Jacksonville State to a 15-12 win over Southeast Missouri to advance the Gamecocks into the OVC Championship on Saturday.
Jax State (36-22) will play Austin Peay at 4:45 p.m. in the finals. It marks the seventh time in the last eight years the Gamecocks have played in the OVC finals.
Daniel Watts (1-5) scattered seven hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn his first win of the season for Jax State, while Shae Simmons (0-5) gave up four runs in just 1/3 inning to suffer the loss for Southeast Missouri.
The Redhawks took the early lead after scoring four runs in the first inning, but Jax State tied the game in the third inning after plating four runs.
Sam Eberle drove in a pair of runs and Waldrip slugged a two-run homer to tie the game at 4-4, before the Gamecocks took the lead for good in the fifth inning.
Jake Sharrock and Eberle was hit by a pitch and walked to lead off the fifth, before Waldrip followed with an opposite field three-run home run to give the Gamecocks a 7-4 lead. Erik Underwood and Michael Bishop each drove in another run as JSU pushed across five runs in the frame to build a 9-4 lead.
Jax State added five more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Waldrip and a two-RBI single by Bluestein, while Andrew Bishop singled home another run to give JSU a 14-5 lead.
Southeast then added two in the sixth, and three in the seventh after Tim Rupp hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 14-10.
Bluestein led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to push the JSU advantage to 15-10, but Southeast added two in the home half of the eighth after Kenton Parmely drove in both runs with a double for the final margin.
The Gamecocks pounded out 19 hits in the game as all nine starters recorded a hit, led by five from Bluestein, three hits from Waldrip, while Coty Blanchard, Michael Bishop, Andrew Bishop and Sharrock head finished with two hits.
