TUCSON, Ariz. – Jacksonville State's
Coty Blanchard was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, as selected and announced by
Collegiate Baseball on Tuesday.
It marks the sixth time over the last seven years a JSU player has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American squad and the eighth player under head coach
Jim Case.
Blanchard was named to the OVC All-Freshman team last month after helping the Gamecocks to their second-most wins in the school's Division I history with a 36-23 mark and into the OVC Championship Game for the seventh time out of the last eight years.
The Leesburg, Ala., native was the Gamecocks' primary third baseman, while also seeing time at short and second base, and quickly established himself as the team's leadoff hitter.
Blanchard hit .335 with two home runs and 32 RBI, while also drawing a team-high 33 walks to boost his on-base percentage to .423. Also an All-Newcomer and Freshman of the Year selection for JSU's football team in the fall, Blanchard carried his success into his first semester of baseball after spending all fall on the football field.
Blanchard joins a list of former Gamecocks that have earned Freshman All-America honors, including
Sam Eberle (2009),
Kyle Bluestein (2009), Todd Cunningham (2008), Ben Tootle (2007), Bert Smith (2006), Donovan Hand (2005) and Brian Haskins (2002).
