
JSU Rallies For 3-2 Volleyball Win at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. – With its back against the wall on Saturday afternoon, the Jacksonville State volleyball team rallied to win the final two sets and hand Murray State a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11) home defeat to wrap up a two-match Ohio Valley Conference road trip.
Three Gamecocks (4-10, 2-2 OVC) had double figures in the kills column and four more had 10 or more digs in handing the Racers (3-13, 3-2 OVC) their first home loss in league action this season.
"This was such a great team win," JSU head coach Joseph Goodson said. "To be able to fight back on the road definitely took a tremendous effort. All 11 girls contributed. I can't single out just one player. This is the type of win that really makes a coach proud."
Senior Lauren Harkins led the JSU defense with 22 digs, just ahead of sophomore Kelly Cole's 20. Harkins, a native of Louisville, Ky., and already the school's career digs leader, ran her career total to 1,882. She is currently 12th on the OVC's career digs list and needs just 18 more to become only the 11th player in conference history to reach the 1,900 mark.
Setters Abbey Heredia and Alina Agamy notched their second double-doubles in as many days to pace the Gamecocks offense in the win. Heredia, a sophomore from Cary, Ill., had 30 of the team's 55 assists and then grabbed 13 digs on the defensive side of the net. Agamy, a freshman from Bloomington, Ill., dished out 23 assists and added 14 digs on the back row. She also recorded six kills on the offensive end.
Senior Stephanie Koontz knocked down a career-high 19 kills for the Gamecock offense to lead the JSU trio in double digits. The Edwardsburg, Mich., native also had two of the Gamecocks' eight service aces and had a hand on four of the team's nine blocks. Senior Liza Senenkova recorded 18 kills, also a career high, while junior Hivya Leite pitched in 13 kills. Senenkova, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, also blocked five Murray attacks. Agamy assisted on four of those, as well.
Heredia led all players with four service aces.
The Racers got 24 kills on a .367 from Teresa Krog, while Kayleah Sauer led all defensive players with 29 digs. Lia Havili handed out 48 of the team's 52 assists.
The Gamecocks return home next weekend for just their second homestand of the season. They host Austin Peay at 6 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Tennessee State. Admission is free to all JSU matches at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
