Women's Hoops Falls At SEMO, 66-48

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team wrapped up its first Ohio Valley Conference road trip with a 66-48 loss to Southeast Missouri on Monday at the Show Me Center.

JSU fell to 3-13 on the season and 0-3 in conference play and have dropped its last seven games dating back to the Troy win at home on Dec. 4.  The losing skid matches the longest losing streak since the Gamecocks dropped seven straight early in the 2010-11.

The Redhawks picked up their first OVC win of the season and moved to 4-12 on the season.

In a mirror image of Saturday's opening half at SIUE, JSU struggled to points on the scoreboard and went a lengthy stretch without points.  JSU went almost six minutes without a basket and found itself trailing 13-4 before junior Danielle Vaughn scored two of her final 20 points at the 10:16 mark of the opening half.  After a Candace Morton three-pointer to trim the SEMO lead down to 15-11 with 7:30 left, the Redhawks mounted an 18-7 run to finish the half and take a 33-18 lead at the halftime break.

Vaughn turned in her fifth double-double of the season and 12th of her career with her 20 points and 16 rebounds.  Her rebound mark matched her career-high as she posted 16 against Tennessee State a season ago.  Vaughn pulled down 11 offensive rebounds in the contest.  The Huntsville, Ala.-native scored 14 of her final point tally in the second half to lead the Gamecock charge to open the second half.  Vaughn, who leads the OVC in field goal shooting percentage, connected on8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.  She was credited with three steals and one assist in 31 minutes of action.

Trailing by the 15-point margin, Jax State opened the final half with a 15-6 run in the first seven minutes to trim the SEMO advantage down to six points at 39-33 with 12:51 left in the contest.  That would be as close as the Red and White would get as the Redhawks pushed the lead back out to double digits and eventually hold its largest lead of the contest at 62-42 in the final minutes of the contest.

Freshman Briana Morrow, hampered by foul trouble, finished with nine points and eight rebounds.  Senior Destiny Lane and freshman Candace Morton added eight points.  Morton also dished out four assists.

As a team, Jax State struggled from the field, knocking down just 29 percent (19-64) from the field and 1-of-17 from beyond the three-point arc.  JSU claimed the rebounding edge, 47-34, which led to 18 second chance points.  SEMO, who connected on 40 percent shooting on the night, took advantage of 25 Gamecock miscues and turned them into 25 points on the opposite end.

SEMO placed four players in double figures in the scoring column, led by Bianca Beck's 13 points.  Courtney Shiffer and Brittany Harriel added 12 points each, while Bailie Roberts pitched in 11 points.

JSU returns to the floor on Saturday, Jan. 7 as it faces OVC foe Tennessee State at Pete Mathews Coliseum.  Tip off is set for 2 p.m.  The Gamecocks will take on Morehead State on Monday, Jan. 9 in a 3 p.m. matinee contest on the Jax State campus.
