JACKSONVILLE – After three games away from Pete Mathews Coliseum, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team will open a three-game homestand on Saturday against Ohio Valley Conference front runner Eastern Illinois. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. on the JSU campus.
JSU, 4-17 overall and 1-7 in league play, looks to snap a two-game losing skid after notching its first OVC win of the season on Jan. 14 at Austin Peay. The Panthers of EIU are the lone unbeaten team in the OVC at 6-0 and have put together an eight-game winning streak dating back to a Dec. 22 loss at Illinois-Chicago. The Gamecocks are coming off a 65-59 loss at Tennessee Tech last Monday night, while EIU downed Tennessee State at home Monday.
Saturday's meeting between the Gamecocks and Panthers will be the 15th contest since January of 2004. Since JSU won the first five match ups with EIU, from 2004-2007, it has been a lopsided series in favor of the Panthers. EIU has won the last nine meetings with Jax State, including a season series sweep last year. Saturday will be the lone contest of the season between the two programs. The last Gamecock win in the series was a high-scoring affair as both teams combined for 201 points in a 103-98 JSU win on Feb. 1, 2007 in Charleston. Two of JSU's five wins have come at Pete Matthews Coliseum, while JSU has claimed three wins over EIU in Charleston, Ill.
The contest pits the top-two rebounding teams in the Ohio Valley Conference. EIU leads the league in rebounding margin at +9.3, while JSU ranks second with a +3.1 rebounding edge over the opposition. Jax State also ranks second in offensive rebounds, averaging 16.9 per contest. The Panthers average 28.7 boards on the defensive end of the floor. In OVC games, EIU out-rounds its league opponents by +14, just three rebounds better than the Gamecocks' +11 mark over OVC foes. The Gamecocks have claimed the rebounding edge in seven of the eight league contests, including the last five OVC games.
Junior Danielle Vaughn has turned in eight double-doubles this season, including four in the last six games. Her eighth of the season came last Monday against Tennessee Tech and she did most of her damage in the final 20 minutes. Against TTU, she scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Huntsville, Ala.-post player knocked down a career-high seven free throws in 10 attempts. In the second half, she scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Vaughn is four double-doubles shy of matching former Gamecock Shanika Freeman's mark of 12 in one season. She currently ranks 25th in the nation in double-doubles.
Freshman Briana Morrow continues to pace Jax State on the offensive end of the floor, averaging 11.8 points per game and pulling down eight rebounds per contest. Morrow, from Nashville, Tenn., ranks in the top-15 in the league in scoring and fourth in the OVC on the boards. In OVC games only, she reaches her overall point production and grabs 8.4 rebounds through the first half of the OVC schedule.
Senior Destiny Lane remains a steady scoring contributor at 10.9 points per game. She improved her average last Monday with a team-high 16 points at Tennessee Tech. The Ashville, Ala.-native ranks ninth on JSU's all time career scoring list with 837 points.
JSU closes out the month of January on Monday as it welcomes SIU Edwardsville to Jacksonville for the first time. The Gamecocks will be looking for the season series split as the Cougars claimed a 79-39 win over Jax State on Dec. 31 in Edwardsville, Ill. Tip off is set for 7:45 p.m. and will follow the JSU men's contest with USC Upstate at 5:15.
