JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team continues its season-opening three-game road trip on Wednesday when it visits downtown Atlanta, Ga. for a midweek contest with Georgia State. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CST.
The Gamecocks will be looking to shake off Sunday's loss at Alabama in the 2012-13 debut. The Panthers of GSU posted a 1-1 mark on the first weekend of competition with a win over Central Florida last Friday and a setback at Florida on Sunday.
Jax State and Georgia State will be facing each other for the third consecutive season and the 27th time since the two programs first met in 1984-85. The Panthers have a stronghold on the series with a 21-5 lead in the series and have won the last six contests with JSU. Last season, GSU topped JSU, 68-60 at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The last win by the Gamecocks in the series came on Jan. 25, 2003 in Jacksonville. Jax State has left the GSU campus with victory in hand just three times previously and has not won on the Panthers' home floor since 1999.
JSU has two players on its roster from the Peach State and will face off against a school from their home state. Sophomores Gia Banks and Miranda Cantrell are natives of the state of Georgia. Banks, from Loganville, Ga. and a graduate of Walnut Grove High School, has seen action off the bench in the early stages of her career and played eight minutes at Alabama. Cantrell, from College Park, Ga. and prepped at North Clayton High School, played in all 29 games as a freshman last year. She averaged 3.8 ppints per game and 2.8 rebounds per contest. Cantrell has been slowed this preseason with an injury and could see action in the contest.
Senior Amanda McCarthy and sophomore Candace Morton shared scoring honors against the Crimson Tide as both turned in nine points. McCarthy, from Boston, Mass., scored all nine points from the free throw line and was nearly perfect from the charity stripe with a 9-for-10 outing. Her nine free throws and 34 minutes of action established a new career high for her in those two statistical categories. Morton also pulled down six rebounds in the contest. Sophomore Briana Morrow, Jax State's leading scorer from a year ago, added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman Peyton Hisel made her collegiate debut with her first career start and tallied seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Marikate Gardler and freshman Sydney Brown sparked the Gamecocks off the bench at UA. Gardler carded four points and six rebounds in the opener, while Brown had three points and credited with three blocked shots. JSU out-rebounded the Crimson Tide, 48-47
Kendra Long and Kayla Nolan lead GSU, both are averaging double figures in scoring after a pair of games. Long averages 13 points per game, while Nolan is just shy of a double-double with 12 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.
Jax State returns to the Peach State next Saturday, Nov. 17 with a contest versus the Bears of Mercer in Macon, Ga. Game time is set for 1 p.m. CST. The Gamecocks conclude the four games in a nine-day stretch with their season opener on Monday, Nov. 19 against Samford at the Pete Mathews Coliseum on the JSU campus.
