JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville State concludes its season-opening three-game road trip on Saturday with its third game in seven days with a trip to Macon, Ga. to face the Bears of Mercer. Game time is set for 1 p.m. CST.
JSU will be looking for its first win of the season after falling at Alabama last Sunday and to Georgia State on Wednesday. The Bears have claimed their first two games of the season with victories against Brevard and a 96-90 road win at Troy in their last outing on Wednesday.
Saturday's tilt will be the 20th meeting between Jax State and MU and the first since the 2002-03 season in which both were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Bears hold a three-game advantage in the series, 11-8, and have won the last three games over the Gamecocks. JSU claimed the season series in 2001 with a 67-56 win in Macon and topped the Bears, 62-60 in Jacksonville.
Sophomore Briana Morrow highlighted the Gamecocks setback at Georgia State. Morrow posted her sixth career double-double and first of the season with 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Her rebound total is the most since former Gamecock standout and current JSU Senior Woman Administrator, Tracy (Linton) Broom pulled down 20 boards in a 1993. The Nashville, Tenn.-forward was credited with 11 of JSU's 26 offensive rebounds at GSU and was 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. She turned in a career-high three steals.
JSU has had the edge in rebounds against its first two foes as it posted 48 rebounds in each contest. The Gamecocks hold a +2.5 margin on the boards. At GSU, Jax State pulled down 26 offensive rebounds and registered 27 second-chance points. After the first full week of competition, JSU ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding margin and offensive rebounds.
The Gamecocks have been steady at the free throw line and have put together a 74.4 free throw percentage, knocking down 32-of-43 in the two games combined. JSU is listed second among the OVC teams in that statistical category.
The Bears enter the contest averaging 76.5 points per game, a number that was bolstered by a 96-point effort at Troy. MU is led in scoring by Precious Bridges, who pours in 17.0 points per game. Alicia Williams and Kendra Grant average 13.0 and 12.0 points per game, while Tabitha Bradshaw rounds out the double figure scorers on the squad at 11.5 points per game.
The Gamecocks conclude the four games in a nine-day stretch with their season opener on Monday, Nov. 19 against Samford at the Pete Mathews Coliseum on the JSU campus. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the JSU Athletic Ticket Office at 256-782-8499 or online at JSUGamecockSports.com.
