JACKSONVILLE – After a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 25, hosting Jacksonville University. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
Jax State is looking for its first win of the season, while JU enters the contest at 2-2 after a 78-67 win over Vermont last Wednesday. The Gamecocks narrowly knocked off in-state rival Samford, 48-45, last Monday at home before the break.
Sunday's contest with the Dolphins of JU will be the tenth meeting of the two rivals who were both members of the Atlantic Sun Conference before JSU made the switch to the Ohio Valley Conference. The Dolphins and Gamecocks have played nine previous times on the hardwood since 2000. JSU owns an 8-2 lead in the series against JU. The Dolphins won the 2001 meeting and last season's meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., 87-74.
Sophomore Miranda Cantrell leads the Gamecocks in scoring with an 8.7 scoring mark. A 12-point outing against Samford off the bench bolstered Cantrell's numbers. Sophomore Briana Morrow, who had a stellar performance last season against JU with 25 points, paces the JSU squad on the boards by pulling down 9.3 per game.
A pair of Dolphins average double figure scoring outputs, led by Jade Cargill, who averages 13.3 points per game. Cargill averages a double-double with a 10.3 rebounding mark. Briona Brown comes off the bench to spark JU with 11.8 points per contest.
JSU will host its second Atlantic Sun foe on Wednesday, Nov. 28 as Kennesaw State will visit the Pete Mathews Coliseum for a 7 p.m. contest. After the KSU match up, the Gamecocks will have an eight-day break before hosting Reinhardt College on Friday, Dec. 7. Tickets are available by calling the JSU Athletic Ticket Office at 256-782-8499 or online at JSUGamecockSports.com.
