JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team will close out its three-game homestand on Saturday against Ohio Valley Conference nemesis Tennessee Tech. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. All JSU Faculty, Staff and their families will be admitted free to the afternoon contest.
The Gamecocks enter the second match up of the season with the Golden Eagles at 4-19 on the season and 1-9 in OVC play. JSU will be looking to snap a pair of losing streaks with Saturday's game. Jax State has dropped its last four games dating back to a road win at Austin Peay on Jan. 14. The Gamecocks will also loom to snap an eight game skid to TTU.
JSU and TTU are just 12 days removed from the first match up between the two programs in Cookeville, Tenn. on Jan. 23 as the Golden Eagles edged JSU, 65-59. Senior Destiny Lane led all Gamecock scorers with 16 points in 38 minutes of action. Junior Danielle Vaughn registered a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds in the setback. Senior Brittany Manning chipped in ten points.
Lane will be shooting for her sixth-straight double-digit scoring game on Saturday. The Ashville, Ala.-native has scored in double digits in her last five games and has averaged 12.2 points per game over that time frame. Vaughn, from Huntsville, Ala., has flirted with back-to-back double-double performances against Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. She has eight double-doubles on the season and 35 in her career at JSU. She needs five more to match former Gamecock, Melissa Harden, who had 40 double-double outings in her career.
The Golden Eagles enter the contest having won four out of their last five games with the lone setback coming last Wednesday against SIU Edwardsville in overtime, 64-62. As a team, The Golden Eagles average 63 points per game and allow 65 points per contest. TTU is connecting on 39 percent from the field and 70 percent at the free throw line and average 13.9 made free throws. Senior Tacarra Hayes leads the Purple and Gold in scoring at 17.1 points per game and averages 3.5 assists per outing. Tech newcomer Jala Harris is the other Golden Eagle to post double digits in the scoring column. The UAB transfer scores 13.4 points per game. Brittany Darling leads TTU on the boards with 6.4 rebounds a game.
Sunday will be a travel day for JSU as it treks to Martin, Tenn. to face the Skyhawks of UT Martin on Monday evening on the UTM campus. The contest with UTM is the first of three games away from Jacksonville for the Gamecocks. The Red and White have trips to Morehead State and Tennessee State on the horizon before closing out the regular season with a pair of home games.
