JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State rifle team will take aim at its sixth overall Ohio Valley Conference Rifle title this weekend as JSU preps for the 2012 OVC Rifle Championships this weekend on the UT Martin campus.
The smallbore competition will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, with the first relay beginning at 8 a.m. The air rifle portion of the championship is set for Sunday at 8 a.m.
Last season, JSU, which hosted the league championship, came up short for the overall title behind Murray State as the Racers edged Jax State by 14 points in the aggregate score. The Gamecocks claimed the air rifle title after posting a 2341. The air rifle crown was Jax State's sixth since joining the OVC.
This year's Gamecock shooters have excelled in the last three weeks and hopes to carry that momentum into the OVC event. In its last outing a week ago, JSU claimed second at the MSU-hosted Withrow Invitational after accumulating a 4647 score. Prior to last weekend, Jax State topped Columbus State, 4640-4572, at the Gamecock Rifle Range on Jan. 14 and turned back MSU, 4658-4631, the next week in Oxford, Miss.
Senior Andrea Dardas will be shooting for her second consecutive OVC Smallbore title as the Essexville, Mich.-native won the event last year. The reigning OVC Freshman of the Year, Sam Muegge has put together a solid sophomore campaign. He posted the highest air rifle score of 588 in the CSU match. Junior Monica Fyfe has been steady for head coach Ron Frost, while newcomers Brent Books and Dan McCall have contributed to the team score.
