Austin Peay Surges Past Jax State Women

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State scored a season-high 71 points and knocked down ten three pointers in a 78-71 loss to Austin Peay on Monday night in Ohio Valley Conference women's action at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The seven-point win by the Lady Govs was their first in OVC action, while the Gamecocks fell to 0-10 in the league and 0-22 on the season.

APSU erased an eight-point, 47-39, halftime deficit and out-scored Jax State by 15 points in the final half to secure the road win.  The Lady Govs took advantage of 25 JSU turnovers and turned those miscues into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor.  The Gamecocks took their final lead of the game, 52-51, on a three-point basket by Candace Morton with 15:20 left in the game.  The APSU lead would stay within two possessions over the next 11 minutes before putting together an 8-0 scoring run to extend the lead into double digits for the only time in the contest.  JSU would trim the lead down to four points on multiple occasions down the stretch, but could not get stops on the defensive end and connect on the offensive end.

The Gamecocks were hitting on all cylinders in the first half, especially from three-point range.  The Red and White drilled nine of its ten treys in the first half to conclude the first 20 minutes shooting 9-of-14 from behind the arc.  Morton, Dashauna Truss and Bria'unna Buckner all hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half.   The outside scoring pushed the Gamecocks' lead out to ten points at 22-12 with 10:48 left in the half.  The ten-point advantage was the largest of the season by the JSU squad. JSU cooled off in the second half with just one made basket from long range and were limited to just 11 made buckets in the final half.  The ten made three-pointers was the most since JSU hit 11 treys on Jan. 31, 2009 at Eastern Illinois.

Morton, who had a career night last season against the Lady Govs with 23 points, led the Gamecocks again this season versus APSU with 15 points and seven rebounds.  The Lexington, Ky.-sophomore was 6-of-10 from the field, including a 3-for-7 night behind the three-point arc.  She dished out three assists, recorded a block and had a pair of steals in 34 minutes of action.

Truss turned in her second consecutive double digit scoring night with ten points in the first half.  Sophomore Miranda Cantrell came up one rebound shy of a double-double with ten points and nine boards in the setback.  Destany McLin added nine points, while Marikate Gardler, Gia Banks and Buckner pitched in six points.

APSU's second half surge was engineered by Leslie Martnez, who scored 16 of her game-high 16 points in the second half.  Meghan Bussabarger tallied 17 points, while Tiasha Gray and Kristen Stainback came of the bench for 12 points and 11 points respectively.

The Gamecocks close out their three-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 2 as they will host Morehead State.  Tip off is set for 2 p.m.  The Eagles fell to OVC East Division leader, Belmont, 88-45, on Monday night.
