JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team will close out its home schedule on Saturday evening, hosting Southeast Missouri in Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball action. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
Jax State will honor its two seniors –
Amanda McCarthy and
Danielle Vaughn in pre-game festivities. Both teams will also sport pink in honor of the Play 4 Kay breast cancer awareness initiative. Play 4 Kay is named after longtime North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow. Jax State has a connection to Yow as head coach Annette Watts serves on Yow's coaching staff from 1997-99.
The Gamecocks enter the final appearance at Pete Mathews Coliseum looking for that elusive first win of the season. Jax State is coming off three consecutive road losses after falling in its last time out to Morehead State, 68-54. The Redhawks of Southeast Missouri are looking to claim a road win in the final stretch of the regular season. SEMO comes into the contest with an overall mark of 10-16 and 4-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Saturday's meeting will be the 18th meeting all time between the Gamecocks and Redhawks on the hardwood. Southeast Missouri has had the decisive advantage in the series by claiming 14 of the previous 17 duels. JSU's last win over SEMO came in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Jan. 27, 2011. Two of JSU's three wins in the series have come on the floor of Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The game will be the final time that seniors
Amanda McCarthy and
Danielle Vaughn will compete on the hardwood inside Pete Mathews Coliseum. The tandem has been instrumental leaders inside the Gamecocks' program. McCarthy joined the Jax State program after one season at the University of New Orleans and has been a valuable asset on and off the court. The Boston, Mass.-native has thrived in her final season, averaging 5.7 points per game and almost two assists per game. She established a new career high this season with 13 points at Chattanooga. She also dished out a career-best seven assists. McCarthy has scored in double figures in five games this season. Vaughn, a four-year member of the JSU squad will rank as one of the top scorers in JSU's Division I history. The Huntsville, Ala.-native has tallied over 850 career points and 463 rebounds entering today's affair. Vaughn has seen action in 14 games this season and has upped her scoring mark to 5.6 points per game. She has totaled 42 double-figure scoring games and 19 double-doubles in 99 career games. Saturday will be her 100th game in a Gamecock uniform.
