NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State senior
Danielle Vaughn turned in 16 points and 12 rebounds in her final game in a JSU uniform as the Gamecocks closed out the 2012-13 season with a 69-49 loss at Belmont in the Curb Event Center.
Jax State finishes the season at 1-27 on the season and 1-15 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Bruins improved to 17-12 overall and 11-5 in OVC play and will move on to the 2013 OVC Women's Basketball Tournament that will begin on Wednesday, March 6 in Nashville.
Vaughn, from Huntsville, Ala., led the Gamecocks in a frigid first-half shooting performance with 11 of her final 16 points. She hit three of JSU's four-made baskets in the first 20 minutes and knocked down 5-of-from the free throw line and finished with a career-high eight-made free throws. Vaughn collected her third double-double of the season and finished her career with 21 double-double games.
JSU's four field goals in the first period was the fewest since it made just five last season in the opening half at Kentucky.
JSU opened the game without a basket until 7:14 had run off the first half clock after a
Candace Morton jumper. Morton was the only other Gamecock other than Vaughn to hit a basket in the first 20 minutes. While Jax State was cold shooting and having 12 first half turnovers, BU turned up the heat inside its home arena with a 16-of-39 shooting exhibition. The Bruins took advantage of the JSU miscues and turned them into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. The Bruins, who entered the game averaging 60 points, finished the half with a 45-24 lead.
The Gamecocks were successful from the free throw line in the first half, as they hit 14-of-18 from the charity stripe. They would go on to hit 23-of-27 for the game.
Sophomore
Miranda Cantrell extended her double figure scoring streak to seven games as she scored 11 second-half points to post 13 for the contest. Cantrell also had six rebounds in 34 minutes of activity. Morton was the third Gamecock to register double figures with her 11-point effort.
Amanda McCarthy, also playing in her final game as a Gamecock, came off the bench for seven points and five rebounds. The Boston, Mass.-native was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Belmont extended their lead out to as many as 26 points by the 12:28 mark of the second half on an Alyssa Visbeen basket. BU had a pair of players score double digits in the scoring column, led by Molly Ernst's 13-point output. Ernst hit 4-of-9 from behind the three-point arc in 18 minutes off the bench. Jordyn Luffman added 12 points, while Jordan Coleman pulled down 10 rebounds.
