JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team continues its homestand on Saturday, when the Gamecocks host Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference action at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., right after the JSU women's team's game against the Panthers at 2 p.m.
The Gamecocks try to keep up their success on their home court against an Eastern Illinois team that has dropped its last three games in the series. JSU has won six-straight at home and six in a row against league foes. The Gamecocks also extended their win streak against teams from the OVC's Western Division to 14 games with a 61-52 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Thursday.
In the win, JSU got a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards from junior Jamal Hunter, who also tied the school's Division I record for blocks in a game with seven. The Macon, Miss., native was 4-for-5 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line and teamed up with fellow junior D.J. Felder in the post. A native of Topeka, Kan., Felder went 6-for-7 to score 14 points off of the bench.
Senior Brian Williams led the Gamecocks with 15 points, while also grabbing six boards and dishing five assists. Freshman Undra Mitchem added nine points. JSU shot over 44 percent from the floor, while limiting the Cougars to a .365 shooting percentage, including a .292 clip in the second half.
The Panthers dropped their Thursday game at Tennessee Tech, 81-69. Dylan Chatman was 4-for-6 from behind the arc to score 14 points, while Sherman Blanford pitched in 11. Reggie Smith leads EIU in scoring with 12.4 points per game, while Blanford's 5.9 rebounds per game is tops on the team.
Junior Darion Rackley leads the Gamecocks with 12.7 points per game, while Williams' 11.1 is second on the squad. Hunter raised his season average to 5.3 rebounds per game, trailing only Nick Cook's 5.7 per game average for the team lead.
The Gamecocks will wear teal shoelaces in their three January home games to help a fellow JSU student raise awareness for Cervical Cancer. The team was approached by JSU student Terri Shaw, who recently lost her aunt, Cheri Perry, to Uteran Cancer. She wanted to raise awareness and the Gamecocks agreed to help by wearing the team laces.
Teal represents all GYN cancers, and January in National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, leading Shaw to choose that color and the first month of the calendar year.
Both the men's and women's games on Saturday will be televised live on TV24 and will also be streamed for free on the OVC Digital Network.
