JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team looks to close its homestand on a positive note on Thursday, when the Gamecocks host Tennessee State at 7 p.m. The JSU football team will be recognized at half time.
The Gamecocks conclude a three-game homestand against Tennessee State and will be looking to avenge a five-point loss two weeks ago before taking to the road for a tough four-game stretch starting this weekend.
The Tigers edged the Gamecocks 70-65 in Nashville on Jan. 4 in a game that saw the Tigers shoot 47 percent from behind the 3-point line to build a lead. They then held off a late JSU charge for the win. TSU senior and reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Patrick Miller scored 19 for TSU in that meeting, as did JSU's Brian Williams on a 7-for-11 shooting night.
JSU is looking to bounce back from a loss to Eastern Illinois on Saturday and finish the three-game homestand with a 2-1 record. The Gamecocks will begin a four-game stretch at perennial league powers Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, Murray State and Morehead State beginning Saturday at EKU.
JSU is led on the season by junior Darion Rackley's 12.5 points per game, but over the last five games Williams has carried the scoring load for the Gamecocks. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native is averaging 13.8 points over that stretch, including the 19 at TSU. Junior D.J. Felder has averaged 8.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in that same five-game span for the Gamecocks.
The Tigers are led by Miller, whose 22.2 points per game not only lead the OVC but rank in the top 10 nationally. He is also sixth in the OVC with 4.2 assists per game. M.J. Rhett leads TSU inside with 9.7 rebounds per game, fourth-most in the league. Those go along with 10.3 points per contest.
