JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will host SIU Edwardsville on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the first of a three-game homestand at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks return to the friendly confines of Pete Mathews Coliseum to begin a three-game homestand with a Thursday date with SIUE before hosting Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon. JSU hopes to continue its success at home and against the Ohio Valley Conference's West Division to bounce back from an 0-2 trip to Nashville last week.
Jax State is 5-1 at home this year and is 14-4 in The Pete over the last two seasons. A member of the OVC's East Division, the Gamecocks have had tremendous success against the West, as well. After their win over UT Martin on Dec. 30, JSU has now won its last 13 games against the six teams in the West. Its last loss to a West Division team was at Austin Peay on Jan. 14, 2012, before the league split. The Gamecocks were the only team to go a perfect 6-0 against the West last season.
The Gamecocks return home hoping to get back on track after dropping games at Belmont and Tennessee State last week in the Music City. In Saturday's loss at TSU, Senior Brian Williams had a strong second half to score 19, while leading scorer Darion Rackley managed just two points on a pair of free throws and an 0-for-6 shooting night from the floor. Rackley is averaging 13.2 points per game, while Williams is pitching in 10.8 points and 3.8 assists per game.
The Cougars are coming off an 85-79 win over preseason OVC favorite Eastern Kentucky on Saturday and have won two of their last three. Donivine Stewart leads the team with 11.3 points per outing, while eight of the other 11 players that have seen action are averaging at least 6.0 points per game.
The Gamecocks will wear teal shoelaces in their three January home games to help a fellow JSU student raise awareness for Cervical Cancer. The team was approached by JSU student Terri Shaw, who recently lost her aunt, Cheri Perry, to Uteran Cancer. She wanted to raise awareness and the Gamecocks agreed to help by wearing the team laces.
Teal represents all GYN cancers, and January in National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, leading Shaw to choose that color and the first month of the calendar year.
