JACKSONVILLE – Karch Kowalczyk had three hits and drove in five runs to lead Valpariso to a 10-3 win over Jacksonville State in college baseball on Saturday afternoon.
Drew Hasler (1-0) allowed just one run and seven hits after pitching seven solid innings on the mound to earn the win for the Crusaders. JSU's
Zachary Fowler (0-1) gave up three runs on seven hits in four innings to suffer his first loss of the year for the Gamecocks.
The Crusaders (3-2) took a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and two in the second after Spencer Mahoney and Jeff Edwards each drove in a run with a double and a single.
The Gamecocks (3-2) got on the board in the fourth inning after
Paschal Petrongolo scored on
Josh Bobo's RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Crusaders then scored four in the seventh and three in the eighth to extend the lead to 10-1.
Kowalczyk drove in three runs with a double in the seventh inning, and then drove in two more runs in the eighth inning, before the Gamecocks scored two in the bottom of the ninth.
Andrew Bishop led off with a single and moved to second after Bobo walked.
Stephen Bartlett followed with a double to scored Bishop and Bobo for the final margin.
Spencer Mahoney and Kowalczyk each had three hits for the Crusaders, while Jeff Edwards, Chris Manning and Michael Morman each had two hits. JSU was led by
Daniel Gaither,
Andrew Bishop and Sebra with two hits each.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three game series on Sunday. Game time is set for Rudy Abbott Field and the game will be carried on the JSU Radio Network.
