JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team sets out on one of its final road trips of the season this weekend with a trip to the Bluegrass State to face Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
The Gamecocks, 11-15 overall, are 2-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Facing the same two conference foes as a week ago, JSU will look to return the favor after the Eagles and Colonels came to Jacksonville and knocked off the home team.
Friday night's contest against MSU (7-15, 4-4 OVC) will pit the Gamecocks against one of the top offensive squads in the conference for the second straight game. The Eagles' .194 hitting average ranks fourth in the OVC. MSU freshman Merideth Jewell leads all OVC players with 342 kills on the season.
Last Saturday MSU posted a .254 attack percentage en route to a 3-1 victory over JSU. Jewell finished with 21 kills for the visitors, while sophomore Allyson Zuhlke's season-high 17 led the Gamecocks.
JSU closes the weekend at Eastern Kentucky Saturday evening. The Colonels won in straight sets last week in Jacksonville. Sophomore Charis Ludtke and freshman Mackenzie Rombach paced the offense that night for JSU combining for 17 kills. Sophomore Jennifer Hart recorded a double-double while leading the team in assists (30) and digs (11).
Ludtke leads the Gamecocks with 248 total kills. She's averaging 2.88 kills per set, followed closely by Zuhlke's 2.73 average. Across the net, Jax State is led up front defensively by a pair of freshman in Rombach and Kim Krutsinger who have 59 and 55 blocks, respectively. The back row is locked down by sophomore Hannah Kirk who has a team-high 349 digs. Hart's 227 is the next highest for JSU.
Head coach Terry Gamble's squad is the youngest in the conference and has had to rely on youth more than expected with mounting injuries to an already short list of upperclassmen.
"The team's in a really good spot, they're working hard, we're practicing hard. They still believe in where we're going, and what we're doing," said Gamble.
"We started out of our seven starters, if you include the libero, we started three freshman and four sophomores all weekend. So it's valuable experience, but it's also learning lessons for them. We'll continue to get better."
True freshman Mandee Eberle recorded a career-best nine kills in the Gamecocks last game against MSU, while fellow freshmen Ashley Clingan and Kira Hahn-Ventrell have been inserted into the starting lineups in recent matches.
Live stats will be available for both weekend matches at JSUGamecockSports.com. Both contests are in Eastern Time and scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., or 6 o'clock Central.
