JSU Drops Weekend Opener at Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback at Tennessee State Friday night inside a rowdy Kean Hall.

The loss pushed JSU (11-12, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) one game below .500 on the season. The Tigers (8-9, 3-2) won in their third straight outing.

Sophomore Charis Ludtke's 13 kills led the way offensively for the Gamecocks. The native of Hamburg, Germany, completed her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. Sophomore Hannah Kirk's 17 digs were the most of any Gamecocks on defense. Other leaders include sophomore Jennifer Hart finishing with 28 assists, and freshman Kim Krutsinger who tallied four blocks.

The Tigers controlled the opening set from start to finish leading the entire way. JSU called a timeout trailing 13-7, but it didn't break TSU's momentum as the home team went on to win 25-13.

In the second set, JSU was unable to close the deal on a set that would've tied the match. The Gamecocks jumped out to a 4-0 lead and later led 16-11, midway through the frame. TSU pulled with one, 17-16, forcing a JSU timeout. Ludtke's kill out of the break began a run that saw JSU take a late 22-17 advantage. The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 24, before the teams went back-and-forth in an intense series that ended with TSU winning 32-30.

The third frame was knotted up early at 5-5. A 5-0 run by TSU pushed the Tigers out front once more on a night where the Gamecocks struggled. JSU's third-set .179 attack percentage was the highest of the match for the visitors, but still wasn't comparable to TSU's .379.

JSU will look to bounce back and put another game in the win column tomorrow, with a 2 p.m. match against Belmont. The Bruins currently sit in second place in the league stands with a 41 conference mark. Live stats for the game will be available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
