Live AudioJACKSONVILLE - After suffering its first non-conference home loss since December of 2013 a week ago to Samford, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team will look to protect its home court on Tuesday, hosting Alcorn State. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at JSU's Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Tuesday night also marks SGA Night at The Pete. In addition, it will be White Out the Pete, presented by Sorrell Dental where fans are encouraged to wear white. To top it all off, the entire Marching Southerners will be in attendance to make for a home court atmosphere like no other.
JSU (1-5) will also be looking to halt a three-game losing skid after falling to Wofford last Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After opening the season with a win over Delta State, the Lady Braves have dropped their last two outings at East Carolina and Central Arkansas.
The contest against ASU will be the second meeting between the two programs and the second at Pete Mathews Coliseum. ASU claimed the one-and-only meeting, 61-58, on December 20, 2004 in Jacksonville. ASU is the second opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference that JSU has faced this season as it dropped a road decision to Jackson State on November 21. Jax State holds an overall mark of 20-17 against SWAC foes.
Even though JSU has struggled on offense in the first six games of the season, the squad has been solid from long range this season. The Gamecocks are knocking down 32 percent from three-point range and connecting on 6.7 treys per contest. JSU sophomore
Gretchen Morrison leads JSU from behind the arc at 14-of-32 (41.2%). Morrison is coming off a career-high 15 point outing at Wofford after draining five three pointers. Jax State leads the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goal percentage defense (22.3%) and ranks 27th in the NCAA in the category. The Gamecocks have a string of 52 consecutive games in which they have made a three pointer, dating back to the Belmont contest in January of 2014.
Junior
Briana Benson leads JSU in scoring at 11.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in four of the first six games. Benson was limited to two points in the Wofford contest. Junior guard
Kelly Naughton has given the Gamecocks a scoring boost off the bench with 8.7 points per game. The Elk Grove, Illinois native has connected on 53 percent from the field and 10-of-18 from behind the three-point line. The freshmen duo of
Chloe Long and
Rayven Pearson has gained quality minutes in the absence of sophomore
Tyler Phelion. Pearson made her first career start versus Samford, while Long was penciled in to the starting line up for the first time at Wofford. Long posted 12 points and seven rebounds against the Terriers, while Pearson added nine points in the contest.
The game will precede the JSU men's hoops contest with in-state rival Samford at 8 p.m. Admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
