JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State rifle team will aim for its fourth consecutive and ninth overall Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championship this weekend as JSU will host the 2015 OVC Rifle Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Rowe Hall.
The fourth-ranked Gamecocks look to put a lock on their fifth consecutive bid to the NCAA Rifle Championships in March, which will also be hosted by Alaska-Fairbanks. The two-day championship gets underway on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the first of three smallbore relays. The air rifle portion will be contested on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m.
JSU will be looking for its seventh smallbore title and ninth air rifle crown since joining the league in 2005. Jax State has won nine of the last 10 air rifle titles and has strung together four consecutive smallbore titles. Jax State hopes to keep intact its string of smallbore individual champions as a JSU shooter has claimed medalist honors dating back to the 2009 season. Last season, Samantha Bullard was the fourth JSU smallbore medalist since 2009. JSU has claimed six air rifle individual championships by four different individuals. Former Gamecock Monica Fyfe in 2013 was the last JSU individual to earn medalist honors.
Five-time OVC Coach of the Year, Ron Frost has prepared his squad with a tough schedule this season, competing against the top teams in the country. As a conference, all five teams are ranked in the top-20 of the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Poll. JSU holds the highest ranking entering the championship at No. 4. Murray State follows the Gamecocks at No. 8. UT Martin ranks 16th, followed by Morehead State at 18th. Columbus State and the UTM Women are ranked 20th and 22nd respectively.
JSU enters the championship on a high after shattering the program's all-time aggregate score the Gamecock Rifle Range's all-time aggregate mark last weekend against CSU. JSU turned in a 4699 last weekend against the Cougars.
