JACKSONVILLE - After wrapping up a three-game Ohio Valley Conference road trip last Wednesday at Southeast Missouri, Jacksonville State returns home to face the reigning OVC regular season title holder, UT Martin in a Saturday afternoon contest at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
Saturday will be 'Kids Day' at Pete Mathews Coliseum as prizes will be handed out and as always kids 18 and under receive free admission. The women's contest will follow the 12 p.m. JSU men's contest with the Skyhawks. The Leeds Jumpers will perform at halftime of the men's contest, while participants in the JSU Youth Cheer Clinic will be on display at halftime of the women's match up.
JSU (7-10, 2-3 OVC) finished the road trip at 1-2 with a win at Murray State a week ago sandwiched between setbacks at Austin Peay and SEMO. UTM (-9-7, 2-1 OVC) enters the contest at 9-7 overall and 2-1 in OVC play. After dropping the OVC opener to Eastern Kentucky, the Skyhawks have put together back-to-back wins at Morehead State and versus Tennessee Tech.
The Gamecocks and Skyhawks rivalry dates back to both program's NCAA Division II days, will be meeting for the 32nd time on Saturday with JSU holding a 17-14 advantage in the series. Even though Jax State has a three-game edge in the overall series, UTM has claimed the last seven meetings dating back to January of 2011. JSU's last win over the Skyhawks came in 2010 at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Jax State and UT Martin begin the weekend as the top-two teams in the OVC in scoring defense. JSU leads the league at limiting foes to 57.9 ppg, while UTM's defense allows 63.9 ppg. Both squads rank among the best in three-point shooting. In OVC games only, UTM is averaging 11.3 three pointers made, while JSU connects on 6.2 treys per conference game.
Junior guard Briana Benson leads JSU in scoring with 11.5 points per game as she comes off the bench to pace the Gamecocks. In the first five OVC contests, the Jonesboro, Georgia-native has bumped her scoring clip up to 14.8 points per game. Since conference play started, Benson has scored in double figures, including back-to-back season-high 18 point outings at Murray State and this past Wednesday at Southeast Missouri. In the first five OVC games, Benson is connecting on 39 percent from the field and from three-point range.Â
Sophomore Tyler Phelion ranks second on the team in scoring in OVC games only with 9.4 points per game and a team-best 7.6 rebounding mark. Senior guard Courtney Strain's numbers have risen since the start of league play as the Woodland, Alabama product turns in 9.2 points per game.
