JSU Women Fall Late at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State saw its five-game Ohio Valley Conference road winning streak snapped after Austin Peay surged past JSU, 61-59, on Thursday evening in the Dunn Center on the APSU campus.

The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in OVC play, while the Lady Govs put back-to-back wins together after dropping 10 in a row prior to OVC competition.  APSU moved to 4-11 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

JSU controlled the first 31 minutes of the contest and held a 12-point second quarter lead before taking a 30-22 lead into the halftime break and a slim 45-44 lead after three quarters before the Lady Govs took their first lead since the first two minutes of the contest at 46-45 early in the final quarter.  APSU was able to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter after out-scoring the Gamecocks, 22-15.

APSU senior Tiasha Gray, one of the top players in the league, took control in the second half after being hampered by foul trouble in the first half.  Gray scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half.  She lifted her club on back-to-back possessions to even the game at 56-all and give APSU the lead at 58-56 the next trip down the floor with 3:18 left in the contest.

After a Tyler Phelion free throw to get JSU within a basket at 61-59 and a defensive stop, JSU had one final chance with 13.1 second left but could not get a shot off.

After just hitting 28 percent from the field in the first half, the Lady Govs heated up in the second half, shooting 46 percent in the final 20 minutes.
The Gamecocks could not maintain their solid shooting effort in the second half as they hit just nine baskets in the final 20 minutes.  JSU was 10-of-29 from the field in the opening half, including 50of012 from three point range.  Jax State drained four more the second half to finish the game 9-of-21.  Senior Courtney Strain led all JSU scorers with 15 points, including a season-high three treys in 33 minutes of action.  Junior Briana Benson turned in 13 points with nine coming from long range.  Phelion came off the bench to post 11 points and six rebounds.  Sophomore Gretchen Morrison was the fourth JSU player with double digits in the scoring column with 10 points.

Freshman Chloe Long grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to lead all Gamecocks in rebounding.

Gray led a trio of double figure scorers for APSU as Falon Baker tossed in 13 points.  Keisha Gregory came off the bench to add 11 points.

The Gamecocks' trip continues on to Murray, Kentucky on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest with the Racers of Murray State.  The Racers topped Tennessee Tech, 56-50, on Thursday at the CFSB Center.
